Building a Commercial Intelligence System for Renewable Energy

Goal

Our long-standing client required a Commercial Intelligence System (CIS) for their renewable energy division. While we understood the business objectives, the system’s features and technology were yet to be defined. We agreed to build a Proof of Concept (PoC) to explore the technical feasibility of automating wind development site assessments.

Solution

This experimental project aimed to discover what was technically possible and outline key system features. Knowing the system would rely heavily on geospatial data, we explored various approaches using ArcGIS and Leaflet to securely manage and integrate multiple geoinformation sources.

Simultaneously, our Product Owner worked closely with the client to gather feedback and refine future requirements. Early prototypes helped unify conflicting stakeholder visions, leading to a clear product vision and backlog for the project. The CIS evaluated potential wind farm sites based on wind data, output modelling, turbine layout, and a proprietary financial model, producing a score from 0 to 100.

Result

The PoC demonstrated the solution's value, identified critical business process elements for full utilisation, and highlighted technical challenges while selecting a future platform for development. The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive.
